More PC thoughts
PC as in Personal Computer, that is.
Today I reinstalled both Windows and Ubuntu on my laptop, and I noticed something that I just had to share.
After reinstalling Windows XP, I was amazed at how much faster it was suddenly running! I couldn't believe the difference, it was so pronounced! Then I vaguely remembered something from several years ago. It was the time I installed the Windows XP Service Pack 2. After that I noticed that my computer was running much slower than it was prior to the installation, so I figured that I would skip installing it this time. I did a little research, and I found out that the Service Pack 2 was not really a necessary install, and that if you had a 3rd party firewall and virus software, and you were a responsible web user, you really probably wouldn't notice much difference.
Well, actually, I do. Without Service Pack 2, my computer is running like a charm. Without Norton anymore, it runs faster as well. This time I downloaded a free firewall and virus software from www.majorgeeks.com and so far so good.
Better than good. Excellent!

I've heard that if you reinstall Windows, the speed increase is noticeable. But skipping the bulk of SP2 sounds like moving from impulse power to warp one. (Sorry.) I've considered reinstalling Windows myself, but ... having to start over with all of my little tweaks would be a pain. But for the sake of speed and computing efficiency, I should consider it.
Removing Norton, I think, was a pretty good idea. I'm curious what antivirus and firewall software you're using. Me, I use Avast! 4 and Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5 (the latter of which is old but still powerful and smaller than its younger sibling)--they're my favorites. It's amazing how many people don't have this kind of basic security on their machines.
Ask and you shall receive!
I am using Agnitum Outpost Firewall ver. 1.0.1817.1645 for my firewall, and Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic for my anti-virus software.
I should mention that there are some drivers and things that are supported in SP2, so not installing SP2 means you won't have those drivers. I'm thinking of USB 2.0 support for example. Actually, there is a workaround for that one, but I'm sure there are many for which no workaround exist.
I see, I see. Well, yeah, I'd avoid SP2 as well. Too bad I didn't know that back in the day.
That's only normal, because after a while your pc is filled with garbage and installed/uninstalled programs that it runs like crap. Norton, another "thing" you should avoid at all costs! It's memory/resource consuming and gives nothing but problems. SP2 is utter crap, and I noticed a slowdown after it. BUT, some newer games require it, so can't help it :s
Heyy, I don't mean to butt into your blog thread, but.. you're running successfully without SP2, which I also think is the devil. My machine is for graphic rendering and music editing, so I definitely don't need the extra trash topping off my default processing..
But, my question concerns USB 2.0.. pretty necessary for data transfer, etc.. do you have usb 2.0 functioning without SP2? if so, how? I can't seem to get around it..
