人生の紆余曲折

Hello from Linux!

Sorry I haven't been posting very much lately. I've been a little preoccupied.

I now have the Ubuntu version of Linux up and running on my new computer! Since I installed from the English version, I have some work ahead of me as far as getting the Japanese language support all enabled, but so far so good. All I have left in front of me is to get the input device working.

I have to say that so far I like Linux quite a bit. It's a little work to hammer out the bugs, but it seems to be far more stable than Windows ever did. I guess that means that my laptop is next.

Actually, this is not my first foray into the world of Linux. I have wanted to try out a Linux system for at least 12 years now. I tried in college a couple of times, but I could never get it to work. As it is, I probably would have been in trouble if not for the fact that I now have two computers. That meant that I could plug one into the internet and access all of the nice online documentation that's available. That saved me a lot of headache, I think!

So, hello from Linux!

  • Linux... I've heard lots about it, but I've never even seen what it looks like. I remember reading something about it in connection with DOS, but it can't be that kind of operating system. Could you post a screenshot so I can see what it looks like? :D

  • In fact, Glenn, you see a video of Ubuntu at OSVids.com (though note this is this the previous version, 5.10). I also use Ubuntu sometimes and it's quite good. Linux is, at heart, a command-line system like DOS but, as with Windows, graphical implementations (like Ubuntu) have been developed. Microsoft desires an ever-increasing amount of control over my computer and its content and keeps bloating Windows more and more, and Macs are still expensive and require their users to be a bit too beholden to Apple, so there will likely be a lot more Linux in my future.

There are many distributions of Linux available and Ubuntu is one of many. It is one of the most popular, though. Still, Linux desktops are still developing and there are some issues, such as the lack of proper support for Flash. (Flash is a propietary format and Adobe is, as I understand it, not too forthcoming with proper Linux support.) Also, some excellent Windows programs don't have suitable analogues in Linux yet—in my case, it's foobar2000, my audio player. But then, it's free, is safer than Windows, is actively developed, and can co-exist with a Windows installation. (Thus, if your Windows installation should go kaput, you've got a backup OS. Nice.) It's all good computer experience.

  • Interesting. So it looks like any other OS, I guess.

I'm on a Mac, so I don't have the Windows problem. Thanks for the explanation!
