Dark Chocolate

Today after work I bought 10 boxes of the chocolate on the left for 700 yen, which I must say, is quite a bargain!

As you can see, it's 77% cacao, which means it's a rather dark chocolate.

Much darker than its American cousin.

I remember when I visited the U.S. last time, I felt like having some chocolate. I ran to the local supermarket and searched for the chocolate aisle. Having found the chocolate, I recollected that Japanese chocolate, which I have grown used to, is not as sweet as American chocolate. I can only assume that American chocolate-makers add more sugar than their Japanese counterparts. Anyway, with that thought in mind, I decided to buy some dark chocolate.

I raced home and opened the bar of chocolately goodness and broke off a piece. Mmmm, this is going to be good! I thought to myself as I placed the delectable morsel into my mouth.

....
.......
...........

What the...?!?! was my only thought. The chocolate I had placed in my mouth didn't taste like chocolate at all. I was more like a solid blackish-brown chunk of powdered sugar.

It was such a waste. Here I had this largish bar of chocolate that I was expecting to savor, but I was starting to feel sick after eating only one bite. Needless to say, I couldn't finish it all.

I don't remember the brand, but it wasn't anything exotic. Most likely Hershey's.

Isn't it ironic that something so sweet could leave such a bitter taste? Such is the bittersweet irony of life.

  • Is that "Kakao no megumi" part of your effort to rejuvenate your brain? lol

I eat that kind, too, for "anti-aging" -- but the chocolate with 90-some percent cacao, I can't handle... <(T◇T)>

  • I love chocolate, and prefer milk chocolate... I tried cacao-hyper-rich type of chocolate (something like epigene san mentioned) and found it far too bitter for my liking.

Japanese sweets in general are not so sweet compared with American or European ones. Usually I'm happy with that but sometimes I feel like to try the extremely sweet ones that almost cause me headache (haha).

Did "Cacao no megumi" made you happy then?
I hope that rounded the bitter taste you've exprienced.

If you like chocolate, you might enjoy this article.

  • Epigene, not really, but every little bit helps, right?

Undrentide: Thank you for the article! It was interesting to read. As I get get older, I tend to eat darker and darker (more and more bitter) chocolate among other things. Even Nagasaki castella is starting to be too sweet for me...
