HDTVs in America
I like to read the online version of the Washington Post, and there I was the other day when I ran across an article, or should I say, a column about high definition TVs (HDTV) or in other words, TVs which can receive digital signals and relay that signal without a separate converter.
What really shocked me is the moribund state of the networks and cable companies in terms of their digital broadcasts. By law, all broadcasts must be digital by sometime next year; however, very few channels seem to broadcasting digitally.
This really confuses me.
It confuses me because Japan has a similar law, but it will not go into effect until 2011, I believe. Japanese broadcasters have a longer time to wait until they must comply, but EVERY network in my area is already broadcasting digitally!
Why are the American companies so much slower than the Japanese ones, even though one would think that they have a greater motivation to do so, at least legally speaking?
I haven't a clue. It's very disappointing, however. As someone who was taught for years and years that America is the greatest country in the world, I find it frustrating when other countries can do simple things better than the U.S. can.

ちょっと話が違いますが、地上波放送でhigh definitiontって必要なのかなぁとよく思います。
大画面で、映画を見たりするときは、確かにきれいな映像がいいと思うけど、普段見ているテレビ番組やドラマをよりきれいに見たいとまったく思わないし。
これが始まったら、きっと、多くの女優が肌の汚さや化粧の濃さがリアルにわかって困るんだろうな、と思います。
確かに自分でもハイビージョン放送の必要性はどこにあるかよく分かりませんが、デジタル放送が通常のアナログ放送より効率がいいと言われています。
詳しいことは何も分かりませんが、デジタル放送だと同じバンド幅でも通信できる情報量がかなり優れているそうです。
だから例えばアメリカの地上波放送がデジタル化すれば、局番の使うバンド幅を短くしたうえで余ったものを別の用途で使う予定をしているらしいです。
だからメリットは画像の写り以外でもあると思いますが、私がおかしいと思うのは、何で法律でアメリカが先に完全デジタル化することになっているのに、日本のほうが実際進んでいるかということです。アメリカは大丈夫ですか？このような意味でアメリカの消費者がかわいそうにしか思えません。
