人生の紆余曲折

Changes

Some things that have changed in me since moving to Japan.

At sport events like the World Cup, I used to hope that the team which eliminated the team I was rooting for would likewise get eliminated at the next match. I guess I viewed it as a kind of revenge for beating my team. Now, if my team gets eliminated I will root for the team that beat them. The way of thinking is that if you get eliminated by the eventual champion, there's absolutely no shame involved, but if you get eliminated by a team that loses out in short time, it reflects even worse on yourself.

I drink tea and coffee on a much more regular basis.

I've developed a pollen allergy in the Spring which I never had before. Every year seems to get worse, so it should come as no surprise when I say that this year so far has been particularly bad. I've cried a liter of tears, and not because I'm sad, either!

I've gotten better at budgeting money. I must say that although it was hard to adjust to at first, I like getting paid only once a month.

My taste in food has changed dramatically, in some very subtle ways. For example, I remember specifically thinking that the meat tasted "flat" and the dark chocolate I bought specifically because I assumed that dark chocolate would be bitter was so sweet it made me sick. There were countless other things as well. I don't know what it is some of the time, but the food surely is different.

I've gotten to be much less judgemental about people in general. "Que sera, sera" is my new motto.

  • I hated tea before I went to Japan, but by the time I left, I was drinking it everyday. In mugs, at that, just guzzling it down.

I have also moved into more of a "que sera, sera" way of thinking with people, in a general sense.

And budgeting money--there's an important skill. You da man.

  • Well, I am a late bloomer, but as they say, 大器晩成, right?

Glad to see you drinking the tea! That stuff's good for you!
